2013 Installation Address - President Steve Saux

June 27, 2013

Thank you Sandy for a great Rotary year as our leader.  Also, thanks to Vicky Magas for being here and to all our Club members for helping us serve our community.

I look forward to starting my year as President July 1st.  But first wanted to tell you a little about myself.  My wife, Terry, and I both grew up in New Orleans.  We met in 1968 while I was at LSU and married in 1970. I went to work for The Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT.  After  7 transfers (Hartford, Shreveport, Tulsa, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Tampa, New Orleans) I was appointment Vice President of Sales for United Healthcare in 2003 and took early retirement in 2004.  We built our home in Folsom in 2005 and moved out of New Orleans two months before Katrina.  We have one son, Stephen, age 41, his wife, Lori, and two grandchildren, Sophia age 5 and Liam age 3.

Around that time, my old friend of over 30 years, John Bryan, invited me to a Rotary lunch. I really didn't know anything about Rotary but he did tell me his dad was in Rotary for over 50 years and  thought I might now have time to give back to the community.  I joined in July, 2005 when our Club was meeting at Covington Country Club.  After Katrina hit, the FBI took over the Covington Country Club Clubhouse (some of you remember those days) and we moved around a little before finally settling at Beau Chene.   I have really enjoyed my time with Rotary. I love meeting Rotarians that truly do believe in "Service Above Self".  Thanks to Johnny Bryan for encouraging me to join.  If all of us invited our friends to join Rotary we might double our membership and have an even more friendly and active Club.

Since I have been in Rotary I have been very involved with the Chili Cook-Off, Scholarship Program, bingo, dictionary program, New Heights Therapy Center, Club Secretary for 4 years, our website, newsletter and a few other things.  One story about the dictionary program. I helped a couple of years when Karen Melia was running it but as you know most recently Ben Motion has taken it over and done an outstanding job.  This past year I told my niece who lives in Covington that our Rotary Club would be giving out dictionaries to all 3rd graders in western St. Tammany Parish. Her son, Antonio, goes to Magnolia Trace and when he got his dictionary he told his mother to "tell Uncle Steve that it was nice of him to WRITE this dictionary for me" .

This past year our club has given almost $32,000 to charities (mostly in our community).  We have also given out $20,000 in student scholarships.   I hope we can continue to grow all these programs.

Going forward we will continue to have interesting weekly speakers and worthwhile projects, such as, the Chili Cook-Off, College Scholarships, Josh the Otter, mentoring, Reading Challenge, the Dictionary Project, Homeless Kids Project, Monthly Food Drive, International Projects, and start new programs like support an Interact Club at Lakeshore High School and Rachel's Challenge.

As always membership growth is important but this year I am really interested  in member participation.  I read a poem recently that I found interesting.

Are you a Somebody or a Nobody?

There was an important job to be done and
Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but
Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody

could have done.

Member Participation is my theme this year, so Don't be a RINO  - "Rotarian in name only"  get involved. As our incoming RI President said his theme is "Engage Rotary, Change Lives"

If you truly get involved in Rotary, it will change YOUR life.

Let's make this a great Rotary year.  Thank you.
