New Member Information

Welcome to the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club. You have joined a group of professionals and business people that are the backbone of our community. These individuals share the Rotary goal of "Service above Self".  In other words, to make the community and the world a better place with goodwill and peace to all. We hope that you find your time in Rotary rewarding. A lot depends on you. Will you become involved with Rotary Club members? Will you participate in the activities of the club? We trust and hope that you will receive the Rotary spirit and become an active member.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million members in more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in 170 countries. The Rotary International web site can be found at and has much more information about Rotary.

On February 23, 1905, a Chicago lawyer, Paul P. Harris, called three friends to a meeting. What he had in mind was a club that would kindle fellowship among the members of the business community. It was an idea that grew from his desire to find within a large city the kind of friendly spirit that he knew in the villages where he had grown up. The four businessmen did not then and there call themselves a Rotary club. As they continued to meet, adding others to the group, they rotated their meetings among the member's places of business ... hence the name. The Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club held its first meeting on May 30, 1974 with approximately 20 members in attendance.

Club dues are paid quarterly at a cost of $225.00. This includes the cost of meals that are served buffet style at Beau Chene Country Club. New members pay the $225.00 first quarter's dues and a $25.00 new member fee when they join Rotary. Thereafter they have the option to pay by check or credit card ($10.00 processing fee) when the Treasurer sends out bills.

Guests are always welcome. Guest meals are $17.00 and can either be paid in cash at the door or billed with the sponsoring member's other charges on the following quarterly bill. Guests should be signed in and introduced at each meeting. We encourage you to bring someone who you feel may be a good prospective member and who will share in the vision of Rotary.

The Northlake Mandeville Rotary Club communicates through several different avenues. Our club maintains a web site at A weekly Rotary reminder is emailed to notify members of the upcoming meetings and speakers. At each meeting, members are encouraged to inform others about committee updates, upcoming events, and by using "bragging bucks" (brag about personal, family or employment news in exchange for a nominal donation to the club). A monthly newsletter is distributed to the members through email or found on the club's local website. Invoices are mailed quarterly to members for the collection of dues.

A Paul Harris Fellow is a Rotarian who has donated $1,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation through their local Rotary Club. Arrangements can be made with the club to pay monthly or quarterly until the $1,000.00 requirement is met. It is the club's goal to have 100% Paul Harris Fellows.

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.  Each member is encouraged to donate $100 per year to the Rotary Foundation.

Each Rotary year, a member should choose a committee to devote their time and energy. Member participation helps make our club stronger and more effective with the community projects that are undertaken.  Committees include 1) Membership 2) Newsletter 3) Publicity 4) Rotary Foundation 5) International 6) Programs 7) Website 8) the Annual College Scholarship Fundraiser consisting of the Sponsor, Silent Auction and Scholarship Selection Committees 9) Community Fundraiser 10) Bingo at Heritage Manor 11) Mentoring at local elementary schools 12) the Dictionary Project 15) Rotary Youth Leadership Association (RYLA) and 16) Public Service awards.

Scholarship grants are one of the main activities of this Rotary club. The club holds an annual fundraising event that benefits the scholarship program, and everyone is expected to participate in this event.  We currently grant two (2) $12,000 scholarships per year.

The Northlake-Mandeville Rotary club meets each Thursday at the Beau Chene at 12:00 noon. Meetings usually end at 1:00 pm. If a Thursday meeting should fall on a holiday, the club President will decide whether the meeting will be canceled.

A member should make every effort to attend the regular meetings of their Rotary club. You are expected to attend at least 60% of the meetings in a six-month period. When you miss a meeting, you have not been able to share your thoughts or get to know your fellow business leaders better. Everyone loses.

A member can make up a missed meeting by attending another organized Rotary function. This is best done by going to another Rotary club meeting in the area. There is a four-week period of time to make up a meeting: two weeks before you miss or two weeks after the missed meeting. The goal should be to attain perfect attendance with your club.

Each member will be given a Rotary lapel pin to wear, which should be worn with pride inside and outside of the meeting. You will also be provided with a nametag button to wear during the meetings. The buttons are held in a tray at the Secretary's table as you enter the meeting, and should be returned to the tray as you leave the meeting.
