2008 Installation Address, President Fred Bruce

President's Installation Speech          June 26, 2008

Thank you Debbie and thank you for a great job this past year.

I am Fred Bruce. I am married to Judy and have been for the past 42+ years.  We have three grown children.  Our oldest son lives in WPB with our first grandchild.  Our daughter is unmarried and lives in NY and Saturday morning we fly to Cleveland where our other son and his wife just had twins, one each.

My first involvement with Rotary was while we were living in Florida.  In the mid 80's I was a member of the Wellington Rotary Club which is in the West Palm Beach community.   After moving to Covington, Malise Prieto urged me to join this club which I did in 1996.

Since that time, I have handled the speaker program for a few years, published the newsletter for 5 years, club secretary for the last 2 years among other things.  I am now looking forward to being next years president.  I know it will be a challenge and lot of work, but the support and involvement of the membership will go a long way in smoothing the bumps and filling the pot holes.

As we start a new year, we should have a renewed sense of purpose for our service projects.   The Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club is a very viable one.  There are more than a dozen ongoing events and programs that provide community service and benefits.

Two of the most significant are,

*one, our annual scholarship program which provides $1,000 per semester to qualifying college bound students from our service area and

          * two, our annual community fund-raiser (chili cook-off) which provides funds to several local police, military and community service organizations.

Both of these activities take a lot of work and planning, but we have members that are both willing and capable of making these events more successful every year.  There are other ongoing activities that we do every year on a regular basis in addition to many spontaneous undertakings that are one-time efforts to help our community and the overall Rotary effort.

In the past, most of our focus has been on our local community.  That has been by design, with a little help from hurricane Katrina.  In the coming year we anticipate being more involved in the international area.

*There are plans to send an exchange student to Panama for the 2009-2010 school year. While we have had exchange students in the past, it has been a few years.

*We are also sponsoring a potential ambassadorial scholar, the purpose being to further international understanding.

* Additionally,  Buddy Hall has submitted an application to be a Group Study Exchange leader next year. Through this program young professionals spend 4 weeks experiencing the life, customs and vocational practices of each others cultures. The purpose is to promote international understanding and good will. Our district will participate with District 9980 located in South Island, New Zealand.  Each team has a Rotarian leader along with 7 to 10 non-Rotarian, young professions, between the ages of 25-40.  If you know anyone who would like to be on this team, please let us know.  This will be a first for our Club.

We will also focus this coming year on our membership.  While we are always looking for new members, there will be an effort to better involve the ones we have now.  Our membership varies between 65 to 70  members.  Some are active, but some are not.  I would like to see more member involvement particularly with our newer members.

The Rotary moto is "Service Above Self".  The Rotary theme for this year is "Make Dream Real"

Albert Schweitzer is quoted as saying,

"The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve".

I look forward to serving as your President and urge everyone to get involved.
