Kari Ousterhout and Serena Sossi
Awarded $10,000 Rotary Scholarships
Kari Ousterhout and Serena Sossi were selected for $10,000 Rotary scholarships from the Northlake-Mandeville Rotary Club’s Scholarship foundation. Rotary Club President, Sandra G. Gibson, announced the students will be honored at the Rotary Club’s 15th annual “Sunday with Scholars” fundraiser, Sunday evening, April 28, at Beau Chene Country Club
Chairman of the Rotary Scholarship program, John Caulking said “Mr. John Bryan’s Rotary selection committee evaluated 45 applications from area students. Dozens of students were competitive. Rotary International is the World’s largest service organization, so we look for students who have performed community services and for whom this scholarship will make the biggest financial Impact. Over $ 230,000 to 28 area students have been awarded since 1998.”
Serena Sossi has over a 3.8 grade point average (GPA) at Fontainebleau High School. Ms. Sossi has been accepted and received a scholarships from several colleges: Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, Louisiana College, and Centenary. Serena Sossi plans to major in Pre-Med and to continue on to Medical School. Serena was born in Milan Italy and speaks fluent Italian. Ms. Sossi does considerable community service. She volunteers at day care for her church, is a trainee with EMT at local festivals, volunteers at Habitat for Humanity and seeks opportunities to help in nurseries when needed.
While in High School, Serena has been a member of: National Honor Society, National Hispanic Honor society, International Club, Band (9th grade,) track ( 9th and 10th,) and Ski club 10th.
Serena wants to become a medical doctor: As a child, Serena lived in Italy. " My parents traveled, to India . They told me stories of the thousands of homeless living in the street and on roofs when it flooded, and of little children just running around with nowhere to be. I have been inspired to become an ophthalmologist and to build an orphanage and help young Indian children."
Serena lives in Mandeville with her mother, Mari Immerso, who is employed as a computer programmer at the United States Department of Agriculture in New Orleans. Serena's Father, Francesco Sossi, lives in Italy. , Serena has worked part time, to help her single mother with expenses, and currently works after school at T.J.MAXX.
Kari Ousterhout has over a 4.6 GPA, taking gifted and honors courses. Kari will graduate at the top of her class of approximately 400 seniors at Mandeville High School (MHS) . Ms. Ousterhout lives with her mother, Pamela Ousterhout, CPA at the Youth Service Bureau.
Kari has received scholarships from and will attend the University of Southern Mississippi this fall. She plans to major in nursing. While achieving academic excellence, Kari also works part-time at Texas Road House.
Kari has been a member of the MHS varsity Basketball Team ( four years,) Student Senate, Youth Choir, Tri Theta service sorority, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Big Brother/Big Sister Program. Additionally, Kari's community service includes Keep Mandeville Beautiful, helping special needs children through Illuminate, Yes We Can!, and Nite-Life, community service with the National Honor Society, and other organizations such as the Choir, World Changers, and Senior Citizen Christmas. She has served on several mission trips and has also worked at fund raisers with car washes and bingos.
Kari received over a dozen high school awards including in-part: Composite Academic All-State Athlete, Most Valuable Defensive Basketball player, All-District, and Varsity Co-Captain, Most Outstanding Algebra, PE and Business Computer Applications Student, Senior Homecoming Maid, and honors at iterary rallies, Leadership Council in Tri Theta, and was voted as the Friendliest Female of her class.
Rotary Selection Committee Chairman, John Bryan said that "There are so many outstanding students that it gets tougher every year to select only two students for Rotary scholarships." The Rotary Club currently funds eight $10,000 college scholarships to local students:
The Rotary Scholarship Foundation is an IRS recognized 501 C (3) tax charity and donations are deductible for Federal and State income tax purposes. The Mandeville Rotary club is a 100% volunteer organization with no paid employees. The Rotary Scholarship Foundation has no administrative fees, All funds are applied to the student scholarships and the fundraiser cost. The Rotary Club has awarded over $180,000 of scholarships to students "for whom the scholarship will have the greatest impact."
